VEGA SICILY WINERIES
Vega Sicilia wineries
Eloy Lecanda founded, in 1864, the winery that symbolizes the golden legend of Spanish red wine. Throughout its long history it has belonged to various owners, although it has always maintained an unquestionable personality, producing concentrated, mature, generous and extremely elegant wines.
The Vega Sicilia wineries are located in the Valladolid town of Valbuena de Duero, on a farm that forms a valley that follows the course of the river.
Weather
The Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero has a continental type climate, with Atlantic influence. Precipitation is scarce, with annual averages not exceeding 500 mm, especially concentrated in spring and autumn. The insolation, extensive and abundant, reaches annual averages of 2,200 hours of sun, and the Douro River favors the morning fogs and mists that form an additional source of moisture.
Ground
The soils are clayey-calcareous, with brown areas and an alluvial part.
Vineyard
This one puts a northern limit to the 1000 hectares of the property; the southern limit is established by the forest, which is perched on the slope that reaches the plain. The farm has a plantation of 250 hectares of vineyards, covering 80% of the native red or fine Tempranillo de la Ribera variety and, the rest, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.
The process
The elaboration of these magnificent wines follows a rigorous process and with a strict quality control. The care and attention to detail is constant in each and every phase. Without secrets, but with great wisdom.
Wines
Vega Sicilia is undoubtedly a unique wine and one of the great Spanish classics. His personality is not only derived from the highest quality of the grape and the rigor of its manufacture, but above all from the love of detail that the Álvarez family has managed to transfer to its wines.
From a universal perspective, the peculiar characteristics of Vega Sicilia define it as a very Spanish wine and, in fact, it is one of the wines of the country that generates respect just by citing it. The Vega Sicilia enjoy a certain old but stately accent, like period furniture; wines of great elegance, finesse, complexity and with great capacity to stay in the bottle for a long time.
