The name Lagavulin is an Anglicism of the Gaelic "lag a'mhuilin", which means "the valley where the mill is." The 16-year-old Lagavulin whiskey is marketed by the White Horse distilleries of the United Distillers & Vintners in Glasgow, Scotland. It has been produced since 1816. Lagavulin distilleries are some of the oldest in southern Islay. The 16-year-old Lagavulin, according to the producers, receives the slowest distillation among the other drinks they produce, about five hours for the first distillation and more than nine for the second is the norm. The slowness of this process is what gives Lagavulin 16 years whiskey the roundness and smoothness of its aging. Fermentation of barley is also slow, between 55 and 75 hours. It mainly ages in refillable European oak barrels. Deep amber color. The nose shows strength and refinement.

 

Smell of bergamot surrounded by a sophisticated complex of sweeter, creamy and chocolaty aromas. In more time they resemble lemon and white pepper strokes. With water, the smells include cereal and roasted nuts but the smoked fragrance always comes back. In the mouth it is dry at the first moment, compensated with the sweetness of the sherry.
